MedAI is a secure, intuitive portal that simplifies communication between disability insurance offices and healthcare professionals. It digitises paper-based processes, saves time, reduces errors and improves service quality for everyone involved.
The Challenge
Communication between disability insurance (AI) and doctors was inefficient and largely paper-based. Medical reports were created from Word templates, printed, sent by post and completed by hand. This manual process was costly and caused significant delays in case processing.
Beyond that, a key challenge for doctors was having to find, often across multiple scattered sources, everything they needed to support their patients in the AI process (forms, contacts, case histories, information, FAQs). There was no single, centralized place gathering these essentials, which added friction and time to their work.
Our goal was to build a digital solution that would drastically reduce administrative effort, enhance report quality and make life easier for everyone involved.
Our Solution
We developed MedAI, a secure, multilingual and role-based portal that fully digitises the medical reporting process. Healthcare professionals can now complete and submit all required disability insurance reports entirely online. The system provides dynamically generated, pre-filled forms, a clear overview of reports and patients, and team management features. Medical report filling can now also be shared, as teams are able to collaborate on a single report together.
Beyond medical reports, MedAI also includes online services that support everyday exchanges with disability insurance officesâfor example allowing doctors to announce an absence, share simple documents, or send short messages directly through the portal.
Through direct and secure communication with DI offices, the entire workflow is accelerated, data quality is improved, and communication is streamlined.
Sustainably Innovative
MedAI combines functional, technical and ethical innovation:
- The first platform to fully digitise and optimise the medical reporting process between DI offices and healthcare professionals
- Co-created with doctors and practitioners, ensuring high acceptance through practical, user-centred design
- Built for reusability and independence, powered by a scalable open-source stack with no vendor lock-in
Key Figures
1 year after the pilot launch
A Digital Leap in Disability Insurance
Receiving, creating and attaching documents, as well as updating medical reports, has never been easier than with MedAI. All this comes with secure data protection and faster processing of Disability Insurance (DI) benefit claims.
Digitalisation that makes life easier
MedAI as a Model for Public Digitalisation
MedAI is a showcase example of a digital solution that creates real social value.
It tackles an everyday yet structurally significant challenge at the intersection of public administration and healthcare, with precision, foresight and innovation.
- Tangible impact: measurable time savings, reduced costs through shared development and use, improved data quality.
- Scalability: already in use across several cantons, ready for nationwide rollout
- Sustainability: open-source stack, no vendor lock-ins, high reusability
- Social benefit: less administrative burden for both institutions and healthcare professionals, ceatingmore time for people
Liip was an important partner in developing the MedAI portal. Thanks to their expertise and close collaboration, we created an intuitive platform facilitating information exchange. With Liipâs successful project delivery, we achieved our goal of improving communication between healthcare professionals, DI offices and insured individuals.
The Path towards a National Solution
MedAI is a scalable, evolving solution, a blueprint for other public-sector digital projects, and a clear win for Switzerlandâs digital transformation. The platform is already in use at the DI offices of Vaud, Neuchâtel and Fribourg, and several other cantons are currently implementing it.
From Pilot to Launch
MedAI began as a pilot project in the Canton of Vaud. The platform launched successfully with numerous doctors and medical practices have registered and now complete their reports online. The project also includes the Cantons of Fribourg and Neuchâtel, which have been involved from the very beginning. MedAI is now ready to be rolled out to additional cantons and larger medical institutions.
How we evolved MedAI
Trust Through Security
Security and data protection were top priorities in the development of MedAI.
- HIN login for healthcare professionals
- LDAP and SSO for DI staff
- Role-Based Access Control (RBAC)
- Hosted on dedicated internal infrastructure
- Defence-in-Depth architecture with multiple security layers
Creating Medical Forms with JSON
To digitise the process of creating medical DI reports, we chose to work with JSON Forms.
Thanks to its modular and dynamic structuree, it allows efficient management of a large number of, even complex, forms.
