Herein lies the problem: this network of some 140 libraries across Switzerland has found it difficult to shake off the image of a fusty old book repository. Help, though, was at hand in the shape of a complete overhaul of its visual identity and a brand-new responsive website.
The network called on the web agency Liip to help it leave behind its old ways of thinking and learn to embrace new ideas. The brainstorming sessions between the NEBIS team, led by MichĂšle DĂŒnki, and Liip’s agile development aces generated a host of ideas, some completely way-out, others very workable but in need of a little tweaking. The one point, on which everyone agreed, was that the new website had to be customised to users’ needs.

Faster results

The network identified the three core requirements that nebis.ch had to meet: a catalogue search, a list of other libraries’ new acquisitions and details of the network’s services. All three elements now take centre stage on the new-look homepage.
The project team designed nebis.ch as an information platform capable of serving the assorted needs of multiple target groups. No matter what the opening hours of NEBIS libraries are, users can now search the website for the latest library-related projects and courses, anytime, anywhere. Thanks to the integrated news bar, site users are able to keep track of ongoing projects and the latest NEBIS developments, as well as updates from near and far. After all, NEBIS is anything but a network of fusty old libraries.

Wiki intranet

The network’s intranet “NEBISintern” is a vital information channel for all NEBIS libraries. As such, a multitude of different documents have to be structured and made accessible for a wide range of specialised fields.
With this in mind, the Liip team recommended using Confluence Wiki to implement the intranet platform. An added advantage for NEBIS is that a ready-made internal support structure is in place, as Switzerland’s two Federal Institutes of Technology – ETHZ and EPFL – use the Confluence Wiki tool.
As a result, the project team were able to save on development resources for the internal part of the platform, enabling them to invest more time on restructuring work in order to simplify and speed up the document search process.
