Staying on the ball with Radio Blind Power

With a little help from Liip, Radio Blind Power began broadcasting Raiffeisen Super League football matches in summer 2016. Liip is proud to support this project and, in doing so, contribute to ensuring that the blind and partially sighted can also play a full and active part in society.
Every Sunday, fans flock to football stadiums around Switzerland to cheer on their beloved team, savour the thrills and spills of the match and enjoy a relaxed afternoon with their mates. For Swiss blind and partially sighted supporters, these simple pleasures have long been off limits. Until now, that is!Ā Ā  Thanks to Radio Blind Power, they can follow selected games and fully take part in the all-important post-match analysis with fellow fans and friends.

Full match experience

Radio Blind Power, in partnership with the Swiss Football League and its sponsor Raiffesisen, has been providing an audio-descriptive commentary service since the start of the 2016/2017 season, and this for at least one match per round. The commentary is objective, detailed and focused totally on the ball in play. Listeners are also provided with a wealth of interesting additional information before the match, at half-time, post-match, and during stoppages, enabling them to enjoy the experience of attending a football match as never before.
Two commentators, who have received special training from a fully-sighted person and a visually-impaired person, relay what they see on the pitch. The technical side is assured by the blind and partially sighted members of the Radio Blind Power team, using equipment that they have developed themselves. With this new service, the broadcaster has proven that it is possible to successfully deliver a project when everyone plays to their own strengths but work together as a team. This is what real integration looks like.

Liip support

Radio Blind Power streams its audio commentary of the Raiffesisen Super League matches over its website blindpower.ch. The web agency Liip oversaw the design, which offers barrier-free accessibility for all. Currently, there is a broadcast delay of roughly 10 seconds, but Radio Blind Power and its partners want to bring in real-time live streaming in the near future. This will let blind and visually impaired fans enjoy a proper match-day experience right in the stadium.
Beside the audio descriptions of the Raiffeisen Super League matches, blindpower.ch contains reports about related topics, as well as audio descriptions of cultural events and sports events in general. Furthermore, blindpower.ch is the central channel for acquisitions regarding sponsorships and new members for Radio Blind Power. Drupal 8 was used to build the site and the new version of the open-source framework offers lots of accessibility features in the front end while optimising the back-end for blind and visually impaired users.
