The financial services sector is a major contributor to the Swiss economy. Since the global financial crisis of 2008, the sector underwent a series of strategic and regulatory reforms, which have left a number of firms contending with fluctuating profits.
Fintech start-ups, however, are beginning to challenge the market status quo and pose a threat to the core business of traditional banks. In response, the Swiss Bankers Association and the city of Zurich now actively support Swiss fintech start-ups. They, together with Swiss Finance Start-Ups and several other partners, hosted Swiss Fintech Day on 2 May 2016.
Even back in 2014 the Swiss broadsheet NZZ carried a report on the “silent revolution” in the payments industry. An ever-growing number of customers now take mobile banking and financial services as a given.
The regulatory provisions currently in force still offer a certain degree of protection from new competitors in this market segment. However, the EU’s Payment Services Directive 2 (PSD2) will put an end to this situation once and for all, at least in the payments sector. Banks and financial institutions need to embrace change if they are to survive and thrive in this fintech era.

If they are to survive in the medium to long term, providers will need to offer services that are not only modern but also tailored to what customers actually want, even if this means stealing part of the market share of their existing products.
