The University of Applied Sciences of Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW) asked Liip to host its high-performance learning management system. To ensure that the system is continually updated, the FHNW opted for the Moodle “Software-as-a-Service” solution.

A few years ago learning management systems (LMS) were a niche product for universities. Today, they are central applications. With this change in status, LMS are now expected to meet the highest standards in terms of quality, availability, support and scalability. Under the direction of the FHNW and Switch, an LMS Moodle project, with the working title 'Universities Hosting United', was launched. Currently, some 17,000 students from three Universities of Applied Sciences use this platform, which was implemented by Switzerland’s e-learning pioneer, Liip

Three universities, one operator

The growing technical demands of administering e-learning solutions are often too much for a single university to handle alone. The three participating UAS therefore decided to outsource the management of the Moodle platform to a single host, thereby allowing other universities to come on board at a later date. For Liip, the solution had to be Moodle as 'Software-as-a-Service'. For a flat fee, the customer gets a high-availability LMS with guaranteed response times, continual upgrades and a tight service outage regime.

Lower costs

By bundling operating, maintenance and support services, the UAS have seen total costs fall. Resource shortages and fluctuating personnel capacity levels are now offset, allowing the Universities of Applied Sciences to concentrate on what they do best.

«Die doppelte Migration (Moodle Version und Zügeln zu Liip) lief reibungslos. Der Betrieb läuft performant und äusserst stabil!»
